SrStrat, Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy

SrStrat relies on fluctuations in the Strontium isotopic composition of the oceans over geological time in response to sea level and climatic changes.

The 87Sr/86Sr ratio measured in unaltered Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary limestone, carbonate fossils and marine evaporites may be used to calculate precise age dates by reference to the sea water Sr calibration curve. Sr Strat data are:

• Independent of depositional environment allowing basin and shelf strata to be correlated;

• Independent of faunal province allowing global correlation.
